Temple on the Hill
Another treasure at the National Arboretum is the installation of these sandstone Corinthian columns, arranged as if an ancient temple existed here.
The columns formed a portico on the US Capitol Building, installed there in 1828, and were removed in the 1950's for expansion of the building.
It wasn't until the 1980's that an Arboretum benefactor would lead the effort to permanently preserve the columns, creating their new home on
a gentle hill in the middle the Arboretum's 20-acre great meadow.
