Rood
An Old English word representing the cross, the rood typically hangs from the ceiling at the entry to a church's chancel. Washington National Cathedral's rood is positioned on a horizontal beam which spans the chancel archway about 75 feet above the floor. This upward telephoto view compresses the ribs and carved boss stones of the Great Choir's vaulted ceiling beyond.
