Durham Cathedral is an absolutely astonishing place. Possibly my favorite English cathedral ever,
and that is saying something, since I am such a fan of gothic, and Durham is not gothic!
These two columns are in the nave, diagonally opposite eachother. There is much about Durham, mathematically,
that is interesting, curious, unexplained, and mysterious. For instance, the "diamond" column in the
foreground here, has 144 diamond shapes carved into it. 12 bands of 12 diamonds. While the "chevron" column
in the background has 144 points (both upward and downward)--12 bands of 12 tips.
So, squaring is a recurring concept... Then, each column's circumference is the same as the column's height;
meaning if you imagine them as tubes of paper, and you could unroll the paper, it would be a square.
It goes on an on, the unusual and weird stuff with numbers, in Durham...
